November is Diabetes Awareness Month

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, an annual month-long campaign created to focus our attention on type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes the body to be unable to produce any or enough insulin, resulting in elevated levels of glucose in the blood.

Since 2006, there has been a 72% increase in the prevalence of diabetes in Canadians. Today, 11 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and prediabetes.  Many would consider this a health epidemic our country is facing and are wondering what we can do to change this.

The good news is that diabetes can be managed or reversed based on one’s lifestyle. In honour of Diabetes Awareness Month, Heart Niagara encourages you and your family to make healthy changes.  The greatest changes can occur when improvements are made to diet and physical activity levels.  A healthy diet can help you prevent, control and even reverse diabetes. Eating properly helps keep your blood glucose (sugar) levels within target values.

Heart Niagara is dedicated to helping the community to improve their health through programming, education and support.

In 2015, Heart Niagara developed an innovative strength training program and facility called, HeartCORE. This program is dedicated to helping clients improve their health through physical activity.

Last month, HeartCORE launched a healthy daily living workshop series.   The series is focused on educating the community on healthy lifestyle habits including nutrition, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis and many more informative topics.

HeartCORE is located at Heart Niagara. The address is 4635B Queen Street in Niagara Falls.  For more information call 905-358-5552 ext.109, email
